Island Coast rode a punishing ground attack on a rain-soaked night to earn the shutout victory in the District 6A-11 opener for both teams.
The Gators scored on their first three touches of the football. After a three and out by the Red Nights, Island Coast’s T.J. Johnson took the handoff for a 67 yard touchdown scamper. Island Coast recovered the ensuing kickoff on North’s 34 and Johnson took his next carry up the left sideline to give the Gators the early 14-0 lead.
A blocked punt by the Gators special teams set up the team’s next score, an 18 yard run by Zelan Lambert. The Gators would score twice more in the first half behind runs of 20 by J.D. Irons and a 79 yarder by Johnson. All of Johnson’s 207 yards on the game came in the first half on just seven carries.
“T.J. was great but it was team effort tonight,” Island Coast coach Joe Bowen said. “Our wide receivers were blocking well and it was our first shutout of the season so my hat goes off to the defense.”
