Jalen Hurd, who has been putting up Nintendo-like numbers all season, ran for 394 yards and seven touchdowns to lead Beech (Hendersonville, Tenn.) to a 56-35 defeat of Columbia in the state 5A title game Friday night.
“You’re competing for the state championship, and any time you’re in that situation you’re going to have more oomph, and I’m just glad we pulled it through,” the junior running back Hurd told The Tennessean. “When the offensive line is doing a great job and giving me holes that encourages me to run harder.”
Hurd set a state season rushing record with 3,357 yards, breaking the mark of 3,082 that Huntington’s Jacob Warbritton set roughly seven hours before Hurd’s big night.

Adam Taylor, Katy, Texas
Ran for four first-half touchdowns in a 70-21 defeat of Cypress Ranch (Cypress) in 5A-II quarterfinal on Saturday.
Ty Slanina, East Bernard, Texas
Ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries in a 54-23 2A-II quarterfinal win Friday. Also caught a touchdown pass and pulled in an interception.
Connor Strahm, Sheldon (Eugene, Ore.)
Scored the go-ahead touchdown and had an interception in a 13-6 defeat of Lake Oswego in the the state 6A championship on Saturday.
Robert Webber, Centennial (Corona, Calif.)
Threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns to help knock off then-No. 12 Narbonne (Harbor City) 41-34 Saturday in Southern California Open Division I bowl.
Desmon White, DeSoto, Texas
Passed for 376 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead his team to a 49-45 state 5A-I quarterfinal defeat of Carroll (Southlake) on Saturday.
Troy White, UMS-Wright (Mobile, Ala.)
Ran for 232 yards and three touchdowns to lead his team to 42-14 Class 5A championship defeat of Oneonta on Friday.
