Winning Formula Home

Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) baseball coach Richie Warren isn’t particularly superstitious, but it’s no accident that the Tigers are staying in a different hotel than the one they stayed in the past two years. New accommodations won’t win the Tigers any games, but they could help the team’s psyche.

The novelty of advancing to the state tournament wore off for Jesuit last year, when it dropped its second consecutive championship game to Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, Fla.).

The Mavericks moved up to Class 6A this season, but Jesuit’s players say they’re more focused internally on playing the way they know how than worrying about who they will or won’t play in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Jesuit knows what to expect at the state tournament and Warren and the coaching staff are doing everything they can to prepare for Friday’s semifinal as they would a regular season game.

The stakes are higher, but thanks to their in-season training regimen and the wisdom of pitching coach Geoff Goetz, the Tigers are as physically and mentally prepared as they can be.
