Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) looks to stay loose at state baseball tournament

Winning Formula Home

The Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) baseball team advanced to the Florida Class 5A state tournament for the third straight year, but the trip will be bittersweet for senior Vincent Leto.

The outfielder and USF commit, who figured to be a key part of the Tigers’ lineup, was forced to find other ways to contribute after a knee injury in the fall ended his season before it began.

Throughout his rehab, Leto has provided encouragement from the dugout during Jesuit’s games. He has been an inspiration to his teammates, especially his fellow seniors, who have a final shot at capturing the state title that has eluded them the past two years.

While the pressure is on to win a championship, coach Richie Warren says Jesuit has already accomplished the most difficult part of the process—winning the three games at regionals that it takes just to make it to state.

The Tigers will face a stiff test in this year’s semifinal game.  If they can get past American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), they will be a heavy favorite in the championship game against either of the other two semifinalists.

Jesuit has some unfinished business on this trip, but the team is also savoring the ride. Catcher Nolan Schultz, who, along with Leto, is the player teammates credit the most with keeping the Tigers relaxed, brought his Xbox. He says the team plans to spend part of its downtime in Port St. Lucie playing FIFA. Same as it ever was.
