If Iroquois had any hopes of upsetting Kentucky Country Day in football Friday night, Jordan Duff put an end to them with two crucial back-to-back plays in the Bearcats’ 28-13 victory.

KCD, which crushed Iroquois 59-6 last year before Mark Sander became the Raiders’ head coach, led 14-7 at halftime, but the Raiders were threatening to tie the score with a 14-play drive that reached the KCD 12. A holding penalty pushed the ball back to the 22. Then disaster struck for the home team.

Duff, the Bearcats’ safety, made a diving interception of a pass from quarterback Malik Saunders at the KCD 9-yard line. On the next play, Duff started around left end, then cut back against the grain and down the right sideline for 75 yards to the Iroquois 16.

Four plays later, Robert Scholtz threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Brents for a 21-7 lead with 39 seconds left in the third quarter. KCD went on to win and improve to 4-1.

“I was reading the quarterback’s eyes and I jumped on the (pass) route,” Duff said. “They were about to score and we had to make a big play, and we made it. That was a momentum changer.”

KCD coach Matthew Jones said: “That kid makes plays on both sides of the ball. That interception was huge. We overcame adversity to beat a good ball team.”

Iroquois, which was 1-27 the past three seasons, fell to 2-2.

KCD took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards in 10 plays, with Scholtz hitting Khaleel Wilson on a 10-yard TD pass.

Brents later intercepted a Saunders pass and on the next play swept left end for a 14-0 lead with 3:35 left in the first half.

Iroquois got back in the game when Gus Sarafino scored on a 41-yard run, sidestepping three defenders close to the goal, with 51 seconds left in the half.

Brents caught a TD pass from Scholtz, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 84 yards and two TDs, with 0:39 to go in the third quarter. Brents’ 21-yard run raised the margin to 28-7 with 9:43 remaining. He finished with 120 yards on 16 carries. Duff had 97 yards on six runs and caught five passes for 60 yards.

Saunders scored on a 3-yard end run to cut the margin to 28-13 with 3:45 left. Sarafino led Iroquois rushers with 98 yards on 13 carries.
