A trio of area football teams are in the Sweet 16 round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs, while another is among the Elite Eight.

The MHSAA released its second round playoff schedule, with two area teams in action on Friday and another two playing on Saturday.

In a Division 3 district, Harper Creek (8-2) will host Plainwell (7-3) on Friday beginning at 7 p.m. The Beavers advanced with a 35-21 comeback win over Charlotte in the opening round, while Plainwell defeated Hastings 35-16.

In a Division 5 district, Olivet (7-3) will travel to face Portland (9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Eagles moved on with a 28-14 upset victory over seventh-ranked Lansing Catholic Central, while Portland advanced with a 48-6 victory over Leslie.

A pair of unbeaten teams meet up on Saturday when Climax-Scotts (10-0) visits Mendon (10-0) for a Division 8 district beginning at 1 p.m. The Panthers defeated St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic 34-7 in the opening round, while Mendon shut out Colon 41-0.

St. Philip (7-3) finds itself among the eight remaining teams in the 8-man football playoffs, and will be on the road to face Portland St. Patrick (10-0) for the third time this season when they meet in a regional on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Tigers advanced with a 42-20 victory over Waldron, while St. Patrick defeated Marine City Cardinal Mooney 54-28 in the opening round.
