Kiel's Gilsdorf rose to the occasion

By

Kiel girls soccer player and All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference First Team selection Abby Gilsdorf did it all for the Raiders this season.

The senior and Herald Times Reporter All-Area Girls Soccer Athlete of the Year not only led Manitowoc County in goals scored, but oftentimes would be the one to shut down the opposing team’s best player as well.

Posting 15 goals and four assists, Gilsdorf’s finest offensive performance came in the Raiders’ 4-0 home win over Waupun in April. Gilsdorf not only managed to score all four goals for Kiel, but she made all the scores in the first half. She scored a pair of goals in another pair of wins and tallied the only goal in the Raiders’ 1-0 regional win over Wrightstown.

“Abby always gives more than 100 percent. … She has been really a leader since her freshman year. It has been interesting to watch her develop,” Kiel girls soccer coach Mike Pritchard said earlier this season. “With four years of playing she has become outstanding.”

Defensively, Gilsdorf was tenacious. One memorable performance came when she shut out Campbellsport’s two-time All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference First Team selection Paige Birschbach, something few other opponents were able to do this season.

“Abby never complains about the decisions I make with her positions on the field. … She’s a great asset to have on the team,” Pritchard said this week, reflecting on the season. “I’ll miss her calmness, maturity, and skill. She will be a very hard player to replace next year.”
