The Wausau East girls tennis team didn’t want a repeat of last year’s Wisconsin Valley Conference tournament, but D.C. Everest’s Gabi Kitchell did.

Both the Lumberjacks and Kitchell got their wish as East won its second Valley crown in three years, while Kitchell claimed her second straight No. 1 singles title.

East racked up 101 points, 31 from Thursday’s tournament, held at Wausau East and Wausau West high schools, and 70 from going 6-0 in the dual meet portion of the conference to easily outdistance the rest of the field.

“It means a lot to us because it was our goal to win as a team and as a doubles team after losing by two points last year,” said East’s No. 1 doubles player Caroline Krolicki. “I think we were all ready to play, and hungry to win it this year.”

Krolicki and her partner, Mallory Wanserski, won both of their matches in straights sets, including a 6-2, 6-0 win over the Wisconsin Rapids duo of Liz Hintz and Teresa Gloskowsky in the championship.

“We were serving well today and we hit a lot of powerful overheads,” Wanserski. “We were able to put points away when we got the chance.”

Kitchell, meanwhile, gave up just two games in two matches to win her second straight WVC title.

“It feels good knowing that I’ve won two Valley titles and I’m only a sophomore and have two more chances to win more,” said Kitchell, who beat Marshfield’s Nadeen Liebermann 6-2, 6-0 in the finals. “I played a lot of tennis in the offseason to be ready to try and win again this year.”
