St. Joseph’s won by a point for the second straight week, blocking a PAT by Blacksburg in the fourth quarter Friday night to preserve the victory in a non-region Class A game.
The Knights (2-0), who were coming off a 27-26 win against Barnwell in last week’s season opener, got 196 yards and three touchdowns from Andre Stoddard in the back-and-forth affair.
Stoddard opened the scoring with a 66-yard run and Sean Rusnak added a 1-yard touchdown run for the Knights in the first quarter, but Blacksburg matched the Knights’ touchdowns and led 14-13 when Southside Christian missed a PAT.
The visiting Wildcats (0-1) got a 7-yard touchdown pass from Treyvon Parker to Deandre Surratt to pull ahead 21-13 at halftime. But the Knights evened things in the third quarter, getting a 4-yard run from Stoddard and a two-point conversion pass from Tucker Genal to Ben Quattrone for a 21-21 tie.
Stoddard gave the Knights the lead for good with a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. After Blacksburg pulled within a point on a 40-yard run by Parker, St. Joseph’s blocked the PAT to clinch the win.
