Joe Korom converted on a give-and-go play with Gio Barbozza from 30 yards out with one minute left in regulation on Wednesday afternoon to lift the Middlesex High School boys soccer team to a 3-2 triumph over J.F. Kennedy in Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division action in Iselin.
The Blue Jays (6-7) held a 2-1 lead before Johnny Evangelou knotted the game 2-2 in the second half for the Mustangs (3-11-1). The game was tied 1-1 at the half.
Korom finished with two goals and an assist, while Barbozza notched one goal and one assist for Middlesex. Steven Martinez also contributed an assist and John Castillo made eight saves in the victory.
Steven Solano added a goal for J.F. Kennedy.
Spotswood 2, Wardlaw-Hartridge 0: Hunter Padilla scored on a penalty kick and Saul Marcial scored off a Trevor Miller feed, both in the second half, to lift the Spotswood. Chargers keeper Andrew Pelham stopped a penalty kick along with four other shots for his eighth shutout as Spotswood (12-3) has won six straight games. Cory Harrell made seven saves in net for Wardlaw-Hartridge (3-9-2).
Highland Park 2, Bishop Ahr 1 (OT): Jon Baay and John Marin each scored goals to lead Highland Park (9-6) to the overtime win. Owls keeper Jacob Choi made seven saves. Bishop Ahr falls to 2-12-1.
Woodbridge Academy 2, East Brunswick Tech 1 (OT): Brittany Gasser scored a golden goal six minutes into overtime off an assist from Kartik Pottepalem to lead Woodbridge Academy (4-8-1). The Hornets tied the game on Varun Uchil’s goal after East Brunswick Tech (1-9-1) took a 1-0 lead with a first-half goal from Fredi Rivera off an assist from Elmer Olivera. Grace Brennan had 15 saves for Woodbridge Academy while John Pereira recorded six saves for East Brunswick Tech.
Middlesex Academy 5, Cardinal McCarrick 1: Matt Persing evened the score for Middlesex Academy (7-4-2) when he slotted home a ball Aidan Benderley headed into the six-yard box. The Eagles went ahead for good when Tommy Olson converted a penalty kick in the first half. Persing, Shrey Mendiratta and Ben Eisner all found the back of the net in the second half for Middlesex Academy. Salvatore Pusillo poked the ball into the net from three yards out to give Cardinal McCarrick (0-10) a 1-0 lead early in the game.
South Amboy 2, Piscataway Tech 0: Marvin DeAusen scored two goals, one in each half, to lead South Amboy (8-5-1). Alex Van Reek made 12 saves for the Governors while Piscataway Tech (3-11) goalie Josh Trapp stopped 19 shots.
Middlesex 3, J.F. Kennedy 2: Kayleen Perez netted two goals and Angela Manfredo netted one goal to lead Middlesex (3-11). Taylor Freeman and Vanesa Salazar each scored goals for J.F. Kennedy (2-12). Blue Jays keeper Kaitlyn Schwyher netted 12 saves while Crystal Carlucci made 16 saves for the Mustangs.
Wardlaw-Hartridge 6, Spotswood 1: Valentina Margiottiello recorded a hat trick to lead Wardlaw-Hartridge (13-0). Neema Liverpool netted two goals and three assists while Taylor Gerhart netted a goal and three assists for the Rams. Gerhart and Lacey Gress each made four saves for Wardlaw. Alexandra Coghlan scored the lone Spotswood (7-7) goal in the first half while their keeper Emma Curci made 20 saves.
South Amboy 2, Dunellen 0: Stephanie Gay netted both goals to lead South Amboy (4-8) as Emily Trzeciak and Paulina Musielek had the assists. Governors goalie Amber Carey stopped six shots for the shutout while Dunllen (3-9) keeper Kerry Johnson made 11 saves.
