Moving into the Shore Conference Class A South division isn’t going to be an easy transition for Lacey, but the Lions have some excellent skill players and may be a thorn in the side of some of the traditionally tough A South squads. Here’s what head coach Lou Vircillo said:
Q. Brandon Boos started at quarterback last year, but Tom Kelly took over that spot for much of the season. So who’s the quarterback this season?
A. Brandon Boos is a fine athlete, but he was a running quarterback and not as good in the passing game. We had a difficult choice to make because Kelly was really a rotator as a freshman. So our Achilles heel was that we couldn’t throw very well. Our rushing game was fine. Our defense was fine. But the passing game wasn’t as good as it should have been. So what are we doing this year? Kelly has matured a great deal and we have a fine young sophomore named Conor Davies and he is very good as well. So with those two, we expect to get our passing up over a 50-percent completion rate, which will balance out our offense.
Q. Kyle Spatz was a solid, consistent player who ran for some 1,200 yards last season. How important is his role on this year’s squad?
A. Well, obviously if you have a 1,200-yard rusher returning, it’s a no-brainer that you’re going to ride the horse as much as you can and he’ll get plenty of opportunities to run the ball again. We have another fine rusher in Chris Jensen, and since we’re asking Spatz to play defense, you’ll probably see both of them share the load as running backs, and we’ll balance the rushing game with the passing game.
Q. Defensively, in what areas do you expect this team to excel?
A. We have a lot skill kids back, but our front is going to be a question mark and we’re going to work at it very hard. So as we do that, we expect the defense to be where it’s always been, and that’s to be as rugged a group as we can put together and to be as stingy as we possibly can be.
