Laconia boys charge to D3 cross country sectional title; two SMS girls headed to state

In Division 3, Laconia’s boys team won the Iola-Scandinavia Sectional to qualify for the 100th WIAA state championship meet as a team.

Laconia beat second-place Bonduel 93-106.

Chad Stahmann led the Spartans at the Iola Winter Sports Club with a time of 17:14 to take fifth. Zach Zimmerman was ninth in 17:32 and Mitchell Freiberg ran in 18th in 17:57.

Laconia sophomore Hailey Isaac will be joining the boys team in Wisconsin Rapids after taking third place individually in 15:50. The girls team took fifth place.

Sheboygan Lutheran Sectional

The St. Mary’s Springs girls cross country team was unable to defend its Sheboygan Lutheran Sectional championship, but the Ledgers will be sending two runners to Wisconsin Rapids.

Liz Bohn ran the course in 15:32 earning runner-up honors to Random Lake’s Delaney Sinnen, who ran in 15:05. Senior Abby Busse will join Bohn in the state meet after taking fourth in 16:03. As a team, Springs took third behind Cedar Grove-Belgium and Random Lake.

In the boys race Markesan freshman Tate Hillmann took sixth place and missed out on state qualification by one spot. He was the only non junior or senior in the top 10 of the boys race, and he took sixth in 17:37.

Springs’ Alan Burkart’s solid showing of 17:52 was good for 14th, but not for a state berth. Andrew Skiff took 19th in 18:10.
