Lakeridge QB makes Thomas Tyner's big night possible

Thomas Tyner of Aloha (Beaverton, Ore.) had a monster game on his 18th birthday Friday, running for a state-record 643 yards and 10 touchdowns in a 84-63 defeat of Lakeridge (Lake Oswego, Ore.). He owes it all to hard work, natural ability, his offensive line and opposing quarterback Eric Dungey.

While Tyner was clearly the star of the game, he was still around to set records because Dungey, a sophomore, kept Lakeridge close. Dungey finished with four passing touchdowns and two rushing scores. For their efforts, Tyner and Dungey made the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Performances of the Week list.

“That kid is a real deal,” said Tyner’s father, John, a Hillsboro, Ore., attorney and youth football coach. “He’s the best quarterback I’ve seen in years in Oregon. We had some special teams breakdowns and linebackers who were out and he was able to exploit some of the weaknesses. Thomas had to keep going back on the field.”

Lakeridge coach Tom Smythe said his team had all kinds of schemes designed to stop Tyner, who has run a 10.35 100-meter dash and is expected to play football and run track at Oregon.

“None of them work when he breaks the line of scrimmage and there’s no line of pursuit because he’s so fast,” Smythe said. “I told our players, in three years, he may be playing in the NFL. Some day, you’ll be sitting in a bar watching him on TV and you’ll be able to tell your buddies you almost tackled him in high school.”
