The Lakeview boys’ tennis team qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Finals for the seventh consecutive season on Thursday.
The Division 2 eighth-ranked Spartans finished second at the Portage Northern regional with a team score of 15. Portage Central won the regional with 29 points, while Gull Lake finished seventh with six and Battle Creek Central was ninth.
Lakeview had a trio of runner-up finishes at doubles from tandems Mat Denison and Stan Lassen (No. 1 doubles), Jacob Derry and Tyler Horan (No. 2 doubles) and John Ryan and Ed Ryan (No. 4 doubles). The Spartans’ Cameron Babas placed third at No. 3 singles.
“We knew it was going to be tough in this regional because Portage Central is No. 2 in Division 2 and Zeeland East cmae down and they finished a couple points short,” said Lakeview head coach Mike McGinnis. “We didn’t score a lot of points, but the points were low because the competition was so balanced out after Portage Central.”
