Behind a strong running game, Lakeview picked up a big victory on Friday night in terms of its playoff and division title hopes.
The Spartans ran past host Loy Norrix, winning 46-15. With the win, Lakeview improved to 4-3 overall and 4-1 in the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference East Division.
“We ran the ball and dominated up front offensively,” said Lakeview head coach Matt Miller. “Our offensive line played great. We really just controlled the line of scrimmage.”
Mike Campbell led Lakeview’s rushing attack with 114 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Nick Ayres had 69 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, Jeff Price had a 53-yard touchdown run and Riley Davis scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.
Defensively for the Spartans, Donnie Ernsberger returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown, and Ayres had a 27-yard interception return for a score. Jake Herbers also recovered a fumble.
“The kids played great and we’re really coming together,” Miller said. “Hopefully we can get a win next week against Battle Creek. It should be a big game.”
Reading 34, (At) Quincy 6: Quincy’s Jimmy Strock had a 10-yard touchdown run. He finished with 66 yards on 24 carries. Defensively, Levi Drumm had 12 tackles, Bryce McCavit had 10 tackles and Cody Trine had seven stops for the Orioles (2-5, 1-5 Big Eight). Brett Singer recovered a fumble.
Jonesville 58, (At) Union City 27: Division 7 seventh-ranked Union City was led by Josh Holton with 214 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries. Aaron Watson scored on a 52-yard run for the Chargers (5-2, 4-2 Big Eight). Chris Rieger made 20 tackles, Aaron Watson had 10 tackles and Devon DiGiacomo had 10 tackles.
(At) Sturgis 35, Gull Lake
6: Gull Lake’s Ryan Mutchler scored on a 5-yard run, and threw 9-of-21 for 103 yards. Alex Meade recorded three catches for 41 yards. Meade had 10 tackles, while Ryan Melbow and Ryan Tomlinson each had a fumble recovery for the Blue Devils (2-5, 2-3 SMAC East).
Concord 34, (At) Athens 14: Athens’ Boston Kinney ran in a 2-yard score and caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Austin Monk. Hunter Bolton had 13 carries for 76 yards. while Monk threw for 107 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Kinney had nine tackles for the Indians (0-7, 0-6 Big Eight).
(At) Maple Valley 28, Kal. Hackett 24: Maple Valley’s Brandon Erwin scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left in the game to seal the Lions’ comeback victory. Tyler Hickey led Maple Valley on the ground with 153 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively for the Lions (3-4, 3-4 KVA), Erwin had 15 tackles, Beau Johnson had eight tackles, Austin Gonser recovered a fumble and Tommy Mudge had an interception.
(At) Climax-Scotts 34, Bellevue 18: Climax-Scotts’ Zach Nabozny was 9-of-15 passing for 143 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The Panthers’ Kirk Gibson ran for 77 yards on 14 carries, while Alex Lodes had 74 yards on 14 carries and three catches for 35 yards. Aaron Cook had three catches for 34 yards and Dakota Nowakowski had two catches for 27 yards and two touchdowns. Gibson had 10 tackles and Ethan Vosburg had an interception for C-S (7-0, 5-0 SCAA).
(At) Colon 31, N. Adams-Jerome 6: Colon’s Ryan Balizet ran for 150 yards and two scores and Ronnie Moyer ran for 80 yards and two scores, while Ryan Johnson returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown. Kyler Thibideau had nine tackles for the Magi (3-4, 2-2 SCAA).
