WARSAW — The opening game of the River View Girls Soccer Labor Day Showcase appeared headed to a scoreless tie.
However, West Holmes got a goal from Abby Callahan with 4:09 left in the second half for a 1-0 win over West Muskingum.
“We wore down a little at the end, and their girl made a play,” West M coach Jim McInturf said.
Callahan took a corner kick that was cleared back to her by the Tornado defense and Callahan found the back of the net.
“We just gave her too much time and didn’t pressure her,” McInturf said. “She did what she had to do to get the goal.”
The result was disappointing for the Tornadoes as they had dominated play in the first half but couldn’t find the goal with any of their four shot attempts.
“It got frustrating not getting a goal in the first half,” McInturf said. “In the second half, their physical play wore us down.”
West Holmes held a 13-7 edge in shots for the game. Chelcey Tusing had six saves between the pipes for West M while Shelby Harris saved five in the shutout win.
“It wasn’t the result we wanted, but playing in an event like this against a team like West Holmes can only help us,” McInturf said. “We are getting better every day and that’s all you can ask.”
Chelcey Tusing of West M, along with Courtney Kozak and Callahan, won the honor for the Lady Knights.
