Sheboygan Falls’ boys soccer team escaped with a narrow 1-0 win against New Holstein in both teams’ regular season finales on Thursday.
Matt Wilke broke the stalemate with a header in the 46th minute to lift Falls to the Eastern Wisconsin Conference win.
“We had lots of possession and lots of shots but could not put the ball past the New Holstein defense and especially the goalkeeper …” Falls coach Kristofer Rusch said in a statement late Thursday.
The Falcons outshot the Huskies 19-5.
“I am very proud of how we played tonight,” New Holstein coach Nate Laabs said in a statement. “Falls is an excellent team and they played to win tonight. Nathan Schmitz played his best game of the year to anchor a beat-up defense and Athly Sabish played another excellent game in goal to keep the game close.”
Waupun beat Sheboygan Falls 3-0 on Thursday.
“The match was filled with intense rallies,” Falcons coach Deborah Hasler said in a statement. “I felt our defensive digging was better tonight.”
But, she added, “Waupun was relentless.” The Warriors won in sets of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-15.
Staci Hasler led Falls with 16 kills and as many digs. Teammate Maria Mueller, meanwhile, had a team-high 22 assists.
