Manitowoc Lincoln High School has named Max Ashenbrener to succeed Matt Cihlar as head boys golf coach. Cihlar stepped down earlier this month to accept a teaching position in Abbotsford.
Ashenbrener, a 2008 Lincoln graduate, is currently the Pro Shop Assistant at Branch River Country Club, and is a senior at UW-Milwaukee working toward a degree in business. Ashenbrener is also working toward his certification in golf course management and is a PGA professional.
“I am really excited to get started,” said Ashenbrener. “For me to have the opportunity to work with young men and women to help them improve their golf game and to teach them lifelong lessons through the game of golf will be very rewarding.”
Ashenbrener played golf at Lincoln from 2005-08. During his junior season he helped lead the Ships to the Fox River Valley Conference championship. He also led Lincoln to a second-place finish in a WIAA sectional and a team appearance at the WIAA State Tournament in Madison. At State in 2007, Ashenbrener shot a 3-over 176.
In his senior season Ashenbrener sank a 40-foot putt for an eagle on the final hole of the sectional tournament to qualify for State.
“I truly want to help in the success of individual students and give back to my high school,” said Ashenbrener. “Being able to watch others grow from the lessons they learn in golf in the way I have over the years is very exciting to me.”
“We are fortunate that a person of the caliber of Max has stepped into this position,” said MPSD Athletic Director John Johnson. “It is a great benefit for us that he works at Branch Country Club and plays there often. It is our home course and he knows it very well. I’m anxious for him to get started and to work with him.”
