Lincoln overcomes early struggles for win

After a disappointing 49-14 loss last week at home to Green Bay Preble, the Manitowoc Lincoln football team rebounded with a hard-fought 36-26 victory over Ashwaubenon on Friday night at Ron Rubick Municipal Field in Manitowoc.

Things started to look shaky again when Ashwaubenon (1-3 overall) scored two touchdowns in an 8 second span in the second quarter to go up 12-0.

Lincoln (2-2 overall, 2-2 Fox River Classic Conference) would respond though, scoring twice with less than four minutes to go in the second quarter on runs from Tucker Kielsmeier and Nick Schroeder to take a 14-12 lead into halftime.

Lincoln’s Nick Spurney intercepted the Jaguars’ James Morgan on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, which would later lead to a 46-yard touchdown run by Ethan Just.

The Jaguars came right back, scoring on a 24-yard pass play less than a minute later to make it a 21-20 game following a 2-point conversion.

Lincoln would end up coughing up the lead on an 81-yard pass play with 6:35 left in the third quarter.

That was all the scoring Ashwaubenon would get though.

Kielsmeier ran in a touchdown in the fourth quarter to take the lead back for Lincoln and Just sealed the deal with a 66-yard scamper with 6:48 left in the game.

Just would finish the game with 225 yards rushing to power the Lincoln offense which was shut down for the most part last week against Preble.

In the end, after being burned repeatedly last week, the Ships normally stout defense rose to the occasion forcing five Jaguars turnovers.

Individual statistics and a scoring summary were not submitted to the Herald Times Reporter as of press deadline.
