The Manitowoc Lincoln girls tennis team earned a 7-0 win over Wasuau West in its first matchup of the 16-team Green Bay Southwest Invite before falling 5-2 later in the day to the host Spartans on Day 1 of the competition.

Bailey Budnik and Seidl DeWitt each went 2-0 in singles play for the Ships.

Budnik defeated Wausau’s Natalie Herold 6-0, 6-0 and edged Southwest’s Anneliese Zak 7-6, 6-2 in No. 1 singles.

DeWitt won her first match 6-0, 6-1 over Wausau’s Micaela Gunsoer and later topped Southwest’s Abby Van Ess 7-6, 6-2 in No. 3 singles.

Lincoln dropped all three of its doubles matches against Southwest, but against Wausau the pairs of Leah Auchter-Eden Schuette (No. 1), Michaela Jagemann-Sydney Verbauwhede (No. 2), and Nicole Jagemann-Hannah Ramminger (No. 3) all earned wins.

The Ships continue play today at 8:30 a.m. with two more matches.
