Local spikers strong at P-Northern Invite


The St. Philip, Lakeview and Harper Creek volleyball teams were impressive at a loaded Portage Northern Invitational on Saturday.

St. Philip went 5-1 on the day, losing in the semifinals to Livonia Churchill, 16-25, 21-25.

The Spartans went 2-1-1 in pool play before losing to Mattawan in the Gold bracket quarterfinals, 25-20, 25-12.

Harper Creek went 2-0-2 in pool play, losing in the Silver bracket semifinals to Lakeshore, 29-27, 25-18.

The Tigers, in pool play, beat Paw Paw 25-10, 25-13 and Loy Norrix 25-6, 25-15; in power pool play, beat St. Joe 25-23, 25-18 and Comstock 25-13, 25-7; and in the quarters beat Portage Northern 25-16, 25-9 before falling in the semis.

On the day for St. Philip, Lanae Lesiow had 89 assists and seven aces; Amanda McKinzie had 40 digs, 57 kills and six aces; Sierra Hubbard Neil had 41 digs, 39 kills and 11 aces; Rachel Gallagher had 27 digs; Casey Gallagher had 17 digs and 14 kills; Emily Schaub had 15 assists; and Stephanie Gusching had 10 kills. St. Philip is now 11-1 overall.

The Spartans defeated Vicksburg (25-22, 25-22), Hackett (25-11, 25-15) and split with Lakeshore (25-15, 24-26) and Harper Creek (13-25, 25-17) before the quarterfinal loss to Mattawan.

Lakeview was led by Casey Looper with 33 kills and four aces. Also for the Spartans (7-7), Payton Moore had 82 assists; Madison Olsen had 23 digs; Madelynn Drikakis had 20 digs and four aces; and Macy McCullough had 29 kills.

Harper Creek got a pool play win over Lawton (25-10, 25-13), lost to Mattawan (25-15, 25-12) and split with Lakeview and Lakeshore (20-25, 28-26). The Bevers won their Silver quarter over Three Rivers, 23-25, 25-22, 16-14 before their loss to Lakeshore in the semis.

Harper Creek was led by Breana Ganton with 30 kills, four blocks, 41 digs and five aces. Also for the Beavers (8-5-3), Lauren Grimes had 21 kills, 34 digs and seven aces; Olivia Leson had 25 kills and 11 blocks; Alexis Latshaw had 73 digs and 11 aces; and Edrie Ganey had 82 assists, four aces and 19 digs.


Bronson Invitational: The host Vikings won the tournament with a 25-20, 25-21 victory over South Haven in the finals. The Vikings went 3-1 in pool play with wins over Quincy (25-12, 25-18), Howardsville (25-15, 25-21) and White Pigeon (25-11, 25-8). Bronson lost to South Haven 18-25, 25-16, 15-10. In bracket play, Bronson defeated White Pigeon again, 25-20, 25-18 before the win over South Haven.

Bronson (7-3) was led by Kylei Ratkowski with 32 kills, 22 aces, 46 digs and four blocks; Skyler Sobeski with 36 kills, 42 digs, three aces and four blocks; Alexa Ratkowski with seven kills, 91 assists, 18 digs and five blocks; Emily Mayes with 19 kills and 11 blocks; and Grace Pyles with 48 digs and 7 aces.


Michigan Catholic Invitational: St. Philip placed 14th, with Nicholas Newton being the Tigers’ top finisher with a 70th-place time of 21:20. Other St. Philip top-5 finishers: 77-Rook Lantinga 21:58, 85-Ethan Rutherford 22:34, 86-Andres Campos 22:38, 92-Luke Saye 32:19.


Michigan Catholic Invitational: St. Philip did not place at the event as it entered two runners. Abriana Burrill finished 59th in 28:03 and Amanda Yacovoni was 120th in 40:09.


Quincy 8, Albion 0 (Fri.): Igor Batista and Ashton Diotte had three goals apiece as the Orioles blanked the Wildcats in one half. Also for Quincy (2-0-1), Evan Albright and Jake Rider had a goal and an assist apiece, and Nick Haberl had two assists. Dakota Finley had five saves.
