Not only did the Medford football team ruin Mosinee’s homecoming, but the Raiders — more importantly — also moved into a tie for first place with Mosinee in the Great Northern Conference.

Medford controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, limiting Mosinee to just 30 rushing yards, 131 total yards of offense and picked up a 28-7 victory on Friday night.

With the victory, both teams sit at 4-1 in GNC play with one game remaining for both teams.

The Raiders gave Mosinee a heavy dose of Cole Loerstcher, who racked up 154 rushing yards on 27 carries.

Defensively, Medford contained dual-threat quarterback Zach Pyan, keeping the junior signal-caller inside the pocket and forcing short passes.

“That has been the strategy the past three weeks on (Zach),” Mosinee coach Paul Nievinski said. “He hasn’t developed into a great pressure quarterback yet, but he will, he is only a junior.

“We just made too many mistakes tonight and you have to give Medford credit, they played a great ball game tonight. We have had mistakes kind of creeping up on us, they hadn’t cost us until tonight.”

Medford had a 14-7 halftime lead, with both touchdowns scored by Loertscher. Loertscher’s second score came in the wildcat formation, he took the snap, bobbled it, but recovered and made a nice cut and raced 41 yards for a touchdown.

“I hate to say it, but we got kind of lucky on that play,” Loertscher said. “But the line did a great job of holding their blocks long enough and I found a hole to run through.”

The lone score for Mosinee came early in the second quarter, as Pyan found Zach Sippl for a 9-yard connection.

In the second half and Mosinee keying Loertscher, the Raiders caught Mosinee with a well-timed reverse. Connor Baumann took the pitch from Loertscher, evaded a tackler and raced 24 yards to give the Raiders a 20-7 advantage.

“These kids want (the conference title) bad,” Medford coach Ted Wilson said. “I am really proud of them. They dug deep and beat an outstanding football team tonight,” Medford coach Ted Wilson said.”
