Lone senior Bricker the ace of Fossil Ridge's golf team

Fossil Ridge isn’t looking to rebuild. The plan is to keep the tradition alive.

Losing two of its top four players to graduation from last year’s team that won the regional tournament, the SaberCats are relying on Tyler Bricker — the team’s only senior — to propel them to another quality season.

“We lost a few seniors, but so did a lot of other teams in our league. We have nine juniors and after tryouts the other day, they all performed pretty well, so I still feel like we’re going to have a solid team and contend in the conference,” said Bricker, who finished in the top 30 at the state tournament last year. “I really hope I can make an influence on the underclassmen by showing them the right work ethic so they can carry on when I’m gone.”

Coach Mike Quinn agreed with Bricker’s assessment of the junior class as the group helping Fossil remain a boys golf power in the Front Range League. That being said, Quinn needs his senior to remain an anchor and due to Bricker’s personality, he doesn’t think it will be a difficult task.

“Tyler is our number one player, and he’ll lead by example. He’s everything you want in not only a golfer, but as a son,” Quinn said. “He’s a 4.0 student and just an incredible human being, and we’re very fortunate to have him.”

Bricker’s leadership has paid off. Aside from the SaberCats’ second-place finish Thursday at the Fossil Ridge Invitational, he’s already picked up a college scholarship offer from the University of South Dakota.

He hasn’t committed yet but says the Coyotes are the team to beat. However, as much as he’s looking forward to carrying his golf game to the next level, there’s still a prep golf season Bricker’s looking forward to being a part of and he says he wants to leave Fossil Ridge on top.
