Lourdes Academy’s Lianna Hawi is going to hang around a bit in her first trip to the WIAA Individual State Tennis meet.
The Knights’ senior won her first-ever state match at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Thursday, collecting a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win over Whitewater’s Michala Schramm.
Hawi (19-2), Lourdes’ first state competitor since 2007, advances to face Racine St. Catherine’s Jenna Zimmerman (25-5) in a Division 2 second-round match Friday. Zimmerman, one of four placed players in the field, cruised past Elizabeth Manlick of Columbus Catholic, 6-1, 6-1.
The match is slated for 11:30 a.m.
Things didn’t go so well for the three area Division 1 flights that competed Thursday.
Oshkosh West singles player Liz Edsell lost to Badger’s Cricket Gelderman 6-0, 6-4, while her teammates in doubles — Katie Buege and Alicia Craig — lost to Middleton’s Lindsey Heidel and Julie Rickert, 6-1, 6-3, in a first-round match.
Oshkosh North’s doubles team of Meg Hartzell and Alyssa Schafer were knocked out by Teresa Balistreri and Lane McLaughlin of Divine Savior Holy Angels, 6-1, 6-1.
The Wildcats do still have a doubles team in competition in Hannah Dexheimer and Bailey Sagen, who are seeded fifth and received a first-round bye. That duo will face Bailey Knight and Alex Johnson of Hudson in their first match today.
