Maclay School football coach Kyler Hall said he knew this game wouldn’t be like the last one.
Chasing a championship, after all, never is easy.
But the Marauders withstood a game effort from Gainesville Oak Hall before pulling away in the second half for a 41-13 victory and a second straight North Florida Football Conference championship.
“I’m very happy for these seniors,” Maclay coach Kyler Hall said. “They’ve been through a little adversity in their careers, but they stuck with it and have done a great job establishing a foundation for Maclay.”
Maclay (9-2) beat Oak Hall 50-3 earlier this season, but Hall said he told his players to expect a tougher fight this time around. In fact, he enlisted the help of former FSU defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews and former Seminole Brian Allen to deliver pep talks this week.
The Marauders led just 14-0 at the half thanks to a pair of touchdown runs from Gage Howard (50 and 13 yards).
Maclay turned the game into another rout in the third quarter, building a 34-0 lead once the running game was completely warmed up. Howard added a third touchdown run and Chase Schaum and Tripp Transou each scored touchdowns to put the game away.
Schaum added a final touchdown to close out the scoring and ignite the celebration on Maclay’s sideline.
“They were like little kids out there,” Hall said. “Once they saw we had it wrapped up, they looked like little kids at Christmas.”
