Manitowoc drops pair to end season


The Manitowoc Legion baseball team dropped a pair of regional games on Saturday to be eliminated from the State Tournament, falling in Game 1 to Green Bay Southwest, 13-3 in eight innings, and dropping Game 2 to De Pere, 12-3.

Against Green Bay, Manitowoc built a 3-1 lead entering the fourth inning when the visiting Trojans tallied a pair of runs to tie the game before scoring five in the fifth and four in the seventh.

Manitowoc, which committed six errors in the game, was led offensively by Eli Steimle, Brady Ferry and Travis DuPont who each were 2-for-3.

Brennan Mrotek started and pitched 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. He allowed seven runs, four earned, on two hits, two hit batters and nine walks with one strikeout. Jordan Witczak threw 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

In Game 2, Manitowoc scored three runs in the first four innings before allowing visiting De Pere to tally five in the sixth and one each in the eighth and ninth.

Manitowoc, which once again committed six errors, was led offensively by Nick Spurney and Witczak who were each 2-for-2.

Peter Menges started and pitched six innings for the loss, allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 10 hits, six walks and one hit batter with a pair of strikeouts. Max Hansen pitched one inning of relief, allowing one earned run on no hits, three walks and a hit batter with one strikeout. Spurney pitched the game’s final two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks with no strikeouts.

With the pair of losses in the double-elimination tournament Manitowoc finishes the season 10-18.
