Manitowoc Legion earns tournament win


After falling behind 8-3 after three innings, the Manitowoc Legion baseball team scored five runs in the seventh inning to win its first game of the Marinette Firecracker Tournament over Menominee (Mich.) 10-8 on Friday.

Starting pitcher Nick Spurney earned the win for Manitowoc, throwing 6 2/3 innings and allowing eight runs, all earned, on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Eli Steimle earned the save, pitching 1/3 inning and allowing one walk.

Offensively, Manitowoc was led by Max Hansen who was 2-for-3 with one RBI, two runs and three stolen bases and Cole Wimmer who was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Also for Manitowoc, Jordan Witczak was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Manitowoc (5-4) will play its second game of the tournament today.

Ryan Halverson earned the complete-game win for Sheboygan falls to hand Kiel the home loss. No other information was provided to the Herald Times Reporter.

Manitowoc scored two runs each in the first, second and fifth innings to earn the road win.

Offensively for Manitowoc, Ben Kohls was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI while Nick Spurney was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Also for Manitowoc, Travis DuPont was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Peter Menges started and earned the win, throwing five innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on six walks with five strikeouts. Mason Brunner pitched two innings of relief, allowing one unearned run.
