STEVENS POINT

It has been a decade of dominance for the Wausau East girls swimming team, who on Thursday night completed its 10th straight Wisconsin Valley Conference swimming meet at UW-Stevens Point.

Kendra Hilgemann won the 500 freestyle (5:27.40), Sarah Kane won the 100 breaststroke (1:08.47) and Bethany Novak-Tveten won the 50 freestyle by .01 seconds to lead the Lumberjacks.

Wausau West finished in second place with 417 points, as the Lumberjacks won the meet with 488 points. Stevens Point Area Senior High placed fourth with 333 points and Marshfield took fifth place with 226.

Marshfield’s Emma Holbrook won the 100 backstroke and took fifth in the 200 individual medley. Megan Marotz added a third place finish in the 100 freestyle

The Panthers actually, outswam the Lumberjacks, but the depth of the Lumberjacks proved too much. SPASH won four individual events, as Skyelar Volm won the 200 freestyle, Natalie Neuwirth won the 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley, Janna Check won the 100 butterfly. The trio was also part of the two relay victories, along with Sara Tainter, taking the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

Check was also involved in the most dramatic finish of the night as Novak-Tveten won the 50 freestyle with a 25.10 with Stevens Point Area Senior High’s Janna Check finishing at 25.11.
