The next text message Nick Myers gets from former Maryville quarterback Patton Robinette may be better than the first.
Robinette, now a freshman quarterback at Vanderbilt, sent his successor a text saying how proud he was of Myers for earning the job.
But what the 6-foot-1 senior did Sunday afternoon — on ESPN2 — may bring an even more heartfelt response.
Myers rushed for 67 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 125 yards and two more scores, and the Rebels rallied past rival Alcoa 42-24. Maryville scored 21 unanswered points in the final 8:07.
“I got a text message saying he was proud of me and that I deserved this right here,” said Myers, “so I came out and took care of business.”
Maryville (2-0) has won 31 games in a row. Its last loss was to Alcoa in its first game of the 2010 season.
