McCallister TDlifts Mustangs

A 4-yard TD run by sophomore running back Dewan McCallister late in the third quarter gave Marlboro the lead for good as the host Mustangs moved to the brink of qualifying for the NJSIAA playoffs for the first time since 1999 with a 21-7 win over winless Perth Amboy on Saturday.

The Mustangs (3-4) would qualify in the newly-created Central V bracket with a win next weekend at Edison (3-4).

There are currently just five teams in Central V who have four wins or more. The NJSIAA will fill out brackets to eight teams with teams who are under .500 based on power points if there are not eight teams who are 4-4 or better through eight games. Teams who are .500 will qualify ahead of teams who are under .500, regardless where they are in the power points if there are not eight teams who are .500 or better in the section.

McCallister, who ran for a career-high 156 yards on 27 carries, highlighted a 314-yard rushing performance by Marlboro.

Junior running back Brian Prestigiacomo, who ran for 96 yards on 10 carries, added an insurance TD with a 50-yard midway in the fourth quarter.

Junior Dustin Jensen had a 15-yard TD run in the first quarter and wound up with 45 yards on five carries.

MATER DEI 32, METUCHEN 7: Junior running back Sam Miles’ 69-yard TD run on Mater Dei’s first play from scrimmage sent the Seraphs (1-7) on their way to the win over the Bulldogs (3-5) in a non-conference game. It was Mater Dei’s first win since a 35-29 win over Keansburg last Thanksgiving Day.

Miles had two TD runs. Sophomore quarterback Christian Palmer ran for two TDs and junior Derrick Lopez had a TD run.

The Seraphs did not attempt a pass.

MONSIGNOR DONOVAN 36, CENTRAL 0: Grant Klimek ran for 168 yards and three TDs on 15 carries, quarterback Vinny Grasso added 76 yards and a TD on 15 carries and Kenny Ortiz had a 72 yard punt return for a TD as the Griffins (5-2, 5-0) clinched at least a tie for the Class B South championship with the win over the Golden Eagles (2-5, 1-5) on Friday night coupled with losses by Lakewood and Point Boro on Friday night

SJ VIANNEY 21, HOLMDEL 6: Junior quarterback Billy DeMato threw TD passes of 63 yards to Ishmael Hyman, 55 yards to Steve Callari and 14 yards to Tom Wagner as the Lancers (4-3, 3-2) defeated the Hornets (3-5, 1-4) on Friday night in a Class A Central game and moved themselves into position to qualify for the Non-Public Group III playoffs.

St. John Vianney’s last playoff berth was 2006.
