McLean Bennett 2 Cents: Plenty of stars in area

It’s a bit unfair.

Sheboygan-area sports teams had plenty of talent this spring. And yet we at the Sheboygan Press can name only one representative from each sport as this spring season’s All-Area Player of the Year.

Really, though, there are plenty of “players of the year” — more than we can name.

Rachel Romps, the sophomore pitcher on Plymouth’s softball team, was key in orchestrating her team’s drive to the state tournament.

Doubles partners Travis Waibel and Morgan Ross played only a few matches together for Sheboygan North, but got to the state tennis tournament anyway.

Yet none of them earned POY honors.

I’ll admit finding a single player locally to represent each sport is a subjective science. Sure, some measured analysis goes into it — we’re not just drawing names out of a hat, after all.

But for every player of the year, there’s a handful of equally deserving athletes who get left out.

So, here’s to the non-players of the year. You still deserve a toast.
