In a battle of No. 1 unbeaten girls singles players, Meredith Braiman of Horseheads outlasted Corning’s Connie Li in three sets to help lead the Blue Raiders a 7-0 win over the Hawks in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference match Monday at Horseheads.
Brainman won 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 in a match that lasted more than three hours. Li fought off three match points in the second set.
“Meredith repeatedly ran down powerful crosscourt groundstrokes from Connie late in the match, winning the longer point s on unforced errors,” said Horseheads coach Dan Palmer.
Horseheads doubles teams also all remained undefeated as the Blue Raiders improved to 8-0. The Hawks fell to 2-4.
* Notre Dame 5, Newark Valley 0: Alex Nassar and Sean Brown had two goals apiece to lead Notre Dame to an Interscholastic Athletic Conference win on the road.
Notre Dame held a 13-6 shot advantage and led 7-2 in corner kicks. Will Dochal stopped six shots for the Crusaders.
* Watkins Glen 5, Waverly 0: Josh Teeter scored twice in an IAC shutout win at Waverly.
The Senecas also had goals by Collin Gates, MAtt Estes and Kody Gregory. Watkins Glen held a 32-2 shot advantage and 3-0 margin in corners. Tanner Cantrell made 17 saves for the Wolverines.
* Horseheads 7, Binghamton 0: Kystal Powers had a hat trick to lead the Blue Raiders to a shutout Southern Tier Athletic Conference win at home.
Horseheads’ (3-2) defense held Binghamton (0-5) without a shot on goal. The Blue Raiders had 32 shots and held a 9-2 corner kick advantage.
* Thomas A. Edison 3, Odessa-Montour 0: Molleigh Malanoski served 12 aces and two blocks to help lead the Spartans to a Interscholastic Athletic Conference sweep at home.
Game scores were 25-8, 25-18 and 25-18. Michelle Woychak had a game-high eight kills for Edison (5-1).
Morgan Stermer had three kills, one block and one dig to pace Odessa-Montour (1-5) .
