Merritt Island - Harmony postponed

HARMONY – A driving rainstorm and lightning Friday night washed out Merritt Island’s non-district football game against Harmony.
The teams will play at 4 p.m. Saturday, though the game might start a little later. The teams have different open weeks, so that wasn’t an option.
“That’s the way it is,” Merritt Island coach Jeff McLean said.
Merritt Island (1-0) and Harmony (0-1) each have players taking the ACT, preventing an earlier start. Any delay in getting players to the schools could push back the game. Rain could also affect the replay. The National Weather Service put the chance of rain this afternoon at 40 percent, dropping to 30 percent in the evening.
Weather postponed their game last year, then cut the next-day replay short.
This year, the rains hit about 6:45 p.m. before both teams hit the field for warm-ups. Steady lightning kept the stadium empty until about 8 p.m.
But by that point, standing water pooled on both sidelines and near the center of the field. That made the teams concerned about the wet conditions causing injuries this early in the season.
Even though the rain let up, lightning was still within the 8-mile radius deemed safe. The teams called the game at 8:10 p.m. The rain returned after the game was called.
