'Miracle' punt return touchdown leads to amazing playoff win

By

Trailing Fenwick (Oak Park, Ill.) 21-14 with 19 seconds to play in a second-round playoff game, the Boylan (Rockford, Ill.) football team's hopes of a third consecutive Class 7A state title were all but dashed.

Enter Boylan return man/miracle worker Peter Cimino.

Cimino fielded the ensuing Fenwick punt at his own 10-yard line and immediately slipped, but he managed to regain his balance without his knee hitting the ground. Cimino cut back across the field, picked up some blocks and made his way down sideline. After making one final cut, Cimino found the end zone with no time left on the clock.

The improbable score sent the home broadcasters into a state of euphoria.

"Do you believe in miracles?" one shouted, to which his partner replied, "YES. YES I DO!"

The better question at this point in the game: would Boylan go for two?

YES. YES THEY WOULD!

Boylan linebacker/fullback Zach Matthews plowed into the end zone for the game-winning conversion, prompting additional rhetorical questions from the broadcast team about belief in miracles.

"THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING COMEBACK I HAVE EVER SEEN!" one shouts.

The final touchdown provided a bit of redemption for Cimino, whose fumble on a kickoff in the third quarter led to Fenwick's second touchdown of the game.

"I put a lot of that on myself," Cimino told the Rockford Register Star. "I wasn't going to give up on my team."
