Limiting mistakes is key if a team wants to make an extended stay in the postseason.
The Greenwood/Granton football team found out the harsh reality of making mistakes in Friday’s WIAA Division 7, Level 2 contest against Hilbert, falling 26-14 at Olson Field.
Greenwood/Granton was unable to stop Hilbert from taking advantage of its mistakes throughout the game.
After a fumble at midfield by Greenwood, the Wolves were able to march down the shortened field and cash in on the opportunity, when Spenser Thiel plunged into the end zone from 1-yard out to take a 6-0 lead.
The Wolves had just enough time to score another short touchdown by Spencer Schulz after stopping G/G to take a 12-0 lead into halftime.
“Any points were good for us at halftime,” Hilbert coach Mike Breckheimer said. “Greenwood came out and punched us in the mouth in the first quarter and it took us a little bit to get used to how physical they play.”
Austin Schaffer was able to boost the score to 19-0 on a 1-yard dive, and then Schulz’s second touchdown of the game extended the lead to 26-0.
G/G battled in the fourth quarter, scoring a pair of late touchdowns on a 9-yard run by Westin Wuethrich and then a 15-yard pass from Booker Bredlau to Kole Hinker to make it 26-14 after Alex Volovsek converted on the two-point conversion with less than 10 second left to play, but were unable to pose a threat to Hilbert.
“Tonight was really the story of the season for us,” Greenwood/Granton coach Jeff Trunkel said. “We were able to move the ball, but then we would make a mistake with either a fumble, interception, or penalty, and that would kill our drive.
“The credit all goes to Hilbert for playing tough disciplined football, when we didn’t the whole night.”
