The Monterey High football team continued to pound away on the ground Friday night, beating Alvarez 45-0 in a Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division game at Monterey.

The Toreadores used their typical punishing ground game to go to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in league. Alvarez is winless in eight games.

Jimmy Hill rushed seven times for 88 yards and two touchdowns and Ambrose Chioni had 85 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

Hill also completed three of six passes for 48 yards.

Monterey is at Christopher next Friday while Alvarez is home to Hollister.

Carmel 50, Greenfield 21: At Greenfield, The Padres continued their trek to finishing with their fifth straight unbeaten MTAL season by routing the Bruins.

Carmel has won 31 straight MTAL games as it went to 5-0 in league, 7-1 overall. Greenfield is 2-6, 1-4.

Greenfield stayed close for a while. A 74-yard touchdown run by Abe Diaz tied the game 7-7 in the first quarter.

Diaz then put Greenfield up 14-7 in the second quarter on a 1-yard run.

Carmel tied the game on a 72-yard scoring run by Holden Smith, then went up 21-14 on a touchdown pass from Connor Marden to William Kehoe of 25 yards.

Leading 28-14, Carmel scored again on a 15-yard pass from Marden to Mason Braun. Smith scored on a 32-yard run and the Padres were cruising at 43-14.

Rudy Amezcua caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Luis Carrillo for Greenfield.

Diaz finished with 179 yards on 20 carries while Carrillo was 3 of 6 for 15 yards. Amezcua had two catches for 74 yards.

The Padres host Soledad next Saturday in a game that will have major post-season implications, especially for Soledad.

Greenfield hosts Marina next Friday.

Pacific Grove 48, Gonzales 28: At Gonzales, the Breakers kept their playoff hopes alive with the win over the Spartans.

Kevin Tesky rushed for five Pacific Grove touchdowns and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass for another. He ran for scores of 27, 5, 34 and 79 yards.

Tesky finished with 258 yards and five touchdowns on just nine carries. He also caught four passes for 88 yards.

Gonzales actually led 7-0 on a 1-yard keeper by Sergio Baez, who also hooked up with Raul Delgado for a 70-yard scoring play.

Gonzales was hurt by six turnovers, but Vincent Zarate recovered a fumble in the end zone for a Spartan score. Octavio Arreguin added a 1-yard scoring run and Baez had a 25-yard touchdown run.

Pacific Grove stayed tied for second in the MTAL with a 4-1 mark, 6-2 overall. Gonzales fell to 1-7, 1-4.

The top two teams from the MTAL earn automatic berths into the CCS playoffs.

Next Friday will go a long way in determining one of those two playoff spots when the Breakers host King City.

Gonzales visits Stevenson on Saturday.

Soledad 27, Marina 7: At MPC, the Aztecs stayed in the playoff chase by beating the winless Mariners in an MTAL game.

Soledad improved to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in league. Marina is winless into its third year of varsity football.

Michael Gibbs rushed for two Soledad touchdowns and Rafael Sancen caught a scoring pass from Fernando Longoria.

Soledad is at Carmel next Saturday.

Men’s soccer

Hartnell 6, MPC 1: At MPC, the Panthers used a pair of goals by Joni Cruz to beat the Lobos and remain in title contention.

The win put the Panthers 9-1-7 overall, 6-1-4 in conference with two weeks to go.

Cruz scored early and late in the first half to help Hartnell to a 4-1 halftime lead.

The Lobos tied the match 1-1, but goals by Jovani De La Cruz, Edgar Prieto and Cruz gave the Panthers a three-goal lead at intermission.

Marco Ruelas also scored the Hartnell, which visits De Anza on Tuesday.
