In a Division I game, Mesa Mountain View won its third game in a row, dropping Mesa Westwood 52-7.
Mountain View was led by Weston Birtchter’s three touchdowns. Birtchter scored on runs of 1, 5 and 21 yards, respectively, as Mountain View rolled to a 31-7 lead after two quarters.
“After the first two losses we were really down, but I think we are starting to roll now,” Birtchter said. “Things really started to work for us and I think we can run the table now.”
Mountain View was held to a Luis Bastillo 31-yard field goal on its opening series to take a 3-0 lead with 5:54 to go in the first quarter.
Birtchter scored the first of his three touchdowns on the next series, giving Mountain View a 9-0 lead.
Justin Yetter scored next on a 14-yard run making it 17-0 with 7:25 to go in the second quarter.
On Mountain View’s next possession, quarterback John Clark threw the first of his two interceptions to Ty Dale of Westwood (1-3), who took it 31 yards for a 17-7 score with 3:22 to go in the second quarter.
Mountain View came right back in four plays later, with Clark finding Clark Brown for a 53-yard strike and a 24-7 lead a minute later. Chase Funk added a 6-yard run for a 31-7 lead at the half.
Birtchter then added two touchdowns in the third quarter for a 45-7 lead.
Cayman Nielsen finished the scoring for Mountain View with a 5-yard run making the final 52-7.
Clark finished the game 19 of 27 for 249 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Mountain View held Westwood to 25 yards rushing and 26 yards passing in the first two quarters.
“We’re starting to roll now and we’ve erased the first two games from our minds,”Clark said. “It was tough losing the first two but we have turned it around.”
