* WEST BRANCH 49, WASHINGTON 37: The Bears buckled down defensively for a win Saturday in Washington.
West Branch (6-1) will play its third game in four days Monday at Fairfield.
Coach Stephen Bender said he likes the challenge playing Class 3A schools provides.
“The competition is good for our kids,” Bender said. “And if we win, it helps our district seeding.”
Rylan Murry led the Bears with 15 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Cole Cook also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Lucas Lamont had eight points and six steals.
The Bears led by 11 at half and were up by as many as 20 in the second half against the Demons.
* MOUNT VERNON 53, REGINA 33: The Mustangs put the pressure on the Regals which led to 20 turnovers.
Regina (2-4) had just four turnovers in the second half, but the damage had been done.
“We’re learning,” Regina coach Randy Larson said.
Kenyon Browning led Regina with 17 points and six rebounds.
The Regals now are off until 2013.
* WAHLERT 53, CITY 41: On Friday, the Little Hawks lost in Dubuque.
Lonnie Chester led City High with 15 points. Andrew Hein had 10 points.
Ladarius Taylor led City with six rebounds. Chester had four assists and four steals.
Wahlert jumped out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter and the Little Hawks couldn’t cut into it.
“We started slow in the first quarter but came back strong and had the lead cut to 3 points,” City coach Don Showalter said.
“We continue to improve each game, and I liked our intensity level throughout the game.”
