THE WINNER: Julia Warren
School: La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.)
Athletic achievement: The state’s returning Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, she recorded 487 kills, 311 digs, 42 blocks and 38 service aces this past season while posting a hitting percentage of .428 and leading the Bears (20-4) to the Class 5A state final. A 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association Under Armour Second Team All-American, Warren is a three-time Class 5A First Team All-State selection and is rated as the No. 69 prospect in the Class of 2013 by PrepVolleyball.com. She concluded her prep volleyball career with 1,522 kills and 1,118 digs.
Academic excellence: Warren has maintained a B average in the classroom.
Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally with a literacy-outreach program, as a peer mentor to students with special needs and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with the Young Life youth ministry.
“As a six-rotation player, Julia was a threat to score from the back row and was a primary passer,” said Toby Manzanares, head coach at Rio Rancho (N.M.). “She is an overall great player.”
THE FUTURE: Warren has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on an athletic scholarship at the University of New Mexico beginning next fall.
