THE WINNER: Julia Warren


School: La Cueva (Albuquerque, N.M.)

Grade: Senior

Position: Outside

Height: 6-foot-1

Athletic achievement: The state’s returning Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, she recorded 487 kills, 311 digs, 42 blocks and 38 service aces this past season while posting a hitting percentage of .428 and leading the Bears (20-4) to the Class 5A state final. A 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association Under Armour Second Team All-American, Warren is a three-time Class 5A First Team All-State selection and is rated as the No. 69 prospect in the Class of 2013 by She concluded her prep volleyball career with 1,522 kills and 1,118 digs.

Academic excellence: Warren has maintained a B average in the classroom.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally with a literacy-outreach program, as a peer mentor to students with special needs and as part of multiple community service initiatives in association with the Young Life youth ministry.


“As a six-rotation player, Julia was a threat to score from the back row and was a primary passer,” said Toby Manzanares, head coach at Rio Rancho (N.M.). “She is an overall great player.”

THE FUTUREWarren has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball on an athletic scholarship at the University of New Mexico beginning next fall.
