The Rafe Maccarone story continues to expand, and the newest addition to the cause makes its debut tonight.
In preparation for Saturday’s Play for Rafe alumni soccer game at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School, the Play for Rafe Foundation will hold its first block party at Juice ‘N Java in Cocoa Beach.
That’s just the beginning of an activity-filled weekend planned by those who have sought to remember Cocoa Beach soccer star Rafe Maccarone. Maccarone died in 2007 as the result of a heart condition.
The fundraising group, which organized following Maccarone’s death, started with a Run for Rafe 5K and later expanded to an alumni game.
“We have a great continuing support group that has been there from the beginning,” said Kaiti Hardcastle, one of the organizers. “We’ve had a great response to everything that we’ve been doing. This year, a lot of his former teammates and classmates have really joined in.”
The organization has given scholarships to 11 high school seniors since 2008. Two automated external defibrillators were purchased for Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High in the first year, and the group plans to buy AEDs this year for Mitchell Ellington Park on Merritt Island and for Viera Regional Park.
Another new addition is whoweplayfor.org., a web site that includes information about fundraising events with an eye toward including others in the future.
“Our goal is just that the website can be an outlet for anybody to voice who they play for and why they do it,” Hardcastle said. “In the future, we will assist people in getting the word out about who they play for.”
Following Saturday’s Cocoa Beach alumni game, there will be a Brevard’s Finest game on Sunday at Ellington Park. Participants are expected to include Viera graduate Katie Stengel, now with Wake Forest, and recent Florida State graduate Ella Stephan, a Satellite product.
Players can register at 1 p.m. at the game site.
