On a warm blustery night at Lee Hedges stadium, Jerrick Peterson and Angelo Robert led the Northwood Falcons to a hard fought 28-18 victory over North Caddo.
Peterson, who was the main focus of the Northwood offense, showed his toughness as the primary ball carrier for the Falcons. He rushed for 140 yards on 26 carries, which was significant in itself because of the warm conditions.
Robert scored two touchdowns for the Falcons in the first half. Coach Jim Gatlin, who is beginning his second year at Northwood, was effusive in his praise of his players and the players on the North Caddo team.
He said that his players “missed a lot of opportunities to score.” Both coaches were very complimentary of each others team, and believed that both teams would improve over the long season.
North Caddo fell behind 21-6 in first half, but was up to the challenge in second half as they held the Falcons to just 30 yards in the third quarter. North Caddo was the beneficiary of some mistakes by the Northwood kick return team.
The Falcons were caught sleeping when the Rebels, who punted the ball from their 12 yard line only to recover their own punt and run it in for an 88-yard touchdown run by Curtis Brown, who made up for a touchdown pass that he dropped in the end zone. Brown who played on both sides of the ball for the Rebels was disappointed in the loss, but said that his team “played hard, but made too many mistakes.”
Jerry Byrd, who has just returned to North Caddo, said that his players “are going to have to get in better shape,” but that he was very proud of his team, and that they would continue to improve over the long season.
He also made mention of the heat and cramps that a number of his players were experiencing.
Jontavion Brooks and Brown kept the Rebels in the game, along with a spirited defense that yielded less than 100 yards to the Falcons in the second half. Northwood would make its final score in the fourth quarter after getting the ball on the North Caddo 25 yard line. It was a warm and windy night that made it very difficult for either team to pass the ball with any efficiency. Both teams had to deal with players cramping, which is normal at the beginning of the season.
