FREMONT — Oak Harbor’s Emily Goff, who played at No. 1 doubles last season, likes that the outcome of her matches is exclusively up to her in singles competition.
Goff won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles Tuesday, but the Rockets fell to St. Joseph Central Catholic 3-2.
“She was left-handed and I hit it to her backhand a lot,” Goff said. “I tried to be fast and quick on my feet to get it done.
“I like the challenge at singles because quickness can be an advantage and it’s my responsibility.”
Goff was excited to start the 2012 campaign with a win.
“It gives you a sense of confidence,” she said.
Oak Harbor’s Ashley LaFountain, who has been to state three times, won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
Rockets coach Rick LaFountain wants to build from early-season experiences. Rachel Helle and Amanda Sosa (No. 1 doubles), and Emily Boss and Ashley Gallardo (No. 2 doubles) each won a set.
“Matches like this you hope you come off the court and have learned something,” he said. “It was nice to get out and play.”
