Oak Harbor wins Sandusky Bay Conference in girls soccer

OAK HARBOR — Amber Burnette and Makayla Carpenter each tallied four goals, with Burnette adding four assists as the Oak Harbor girls soccer team claimed another Sandusky Bay Conference crown on Wednesday, topping Margaretta 20-0.

Coming in, the Rockets (12-2-1, 10-1) needed one win in their final two SBC contests. Everyone behind them had three league losses.

Oak Harbor finishes its regular-season today when it hosts Edison.

“It was hard not to keep playing tonight, because we play Edison tomorrow night and they’re pretty tough,” said Rockets coach Renee Goldstein of her team continuing to score with an 8-0 halftime lead. “So that made it hard for me to tell my girls, you can’t go out there and score. And it’s hard for me to say, you have to sit on the sidelines when it’s cold. You want to keep them moving and you want to give the girls who haven’t scored a goal all year a chance to score.”

Paige Velliquette recorded two goals and added an assist for Oak Harbor. Jordan Giesler, Addie Barton, Kelsey Lacer, Sydney Street, Gillian Allen, Ivy Martin, Hannah Hess, Tessa Tyburski and Emily Winters also tallied goals. Allyson Michael, Allyson Croy and Erin Bryant all picked up assists.

“It’s hard to play a game like this,” Goldstein said. “I feel sorry for Margaretta, because they come out and play hard every game. But unfortunately for them, the talent is changing over the years and (the Polar Bears) got a lot of young players with a lot of inexperience.”

Wednesday’s win marked the fourth consecutive season the Rockets have earned the SBC crown outright. They had won 48 straight matches before a loss to Huron last month.

“I know the conference win means a lot to these girls, but they don’t want to do it with two losses,” Goldstein said. “So, I know our girls will be ready (today). Because then we’ll turn around and play the winner of Clyde and Perkins in the tournament next week.”
