Oakland's boys, Siegel's girls leaders of the pack



Oakland’s boys and Siegel’s girls maintained their dominance on the high school cross country world in 2012.

Siegel placed second in the state among Class AAA girls teams. Oakland finished fourth among Class AAA boys teams in the state.

Today, both teams headline The Daily News Journal’s 2012 All-Area Cross Country Team. Both Oakland boys and Siegel girls placed three runners in the all-area first team.

State champion Nicole Gardner, a Siegel sophomore, leads the girls team. She won the Class AAA state meet by more than 13 seconds. Teammates Trisha Frazer and Kiera Weems joins her on the first team. Frazier was 12th at state to earn all-state status with Gardner. Weems was 53rd at state.

The girls team is rounded out by Central Magnet sophomore Claudia Smith and Oakland senior Hannah Waggoner. Smith finished fourth in the Class A/AA state meet and was all-state. Waggoner placed 32nd in her first year on the team.

Oakland seniors Brock Baker and Conner Thompson led the boys. Both finished in the top-10 at state. Baker, an Oklahoma commitment, finished third in the Class AAA state meet. Thompson was eighth.

Teammate Eli Leskinen, a sophomore, joins them after finishing 19th at state in his firt year on the team. Siegel’s Tyler Boone and Central Magnet’s Andre Hillsman round out the team.
