The first round of the Class 5A state golf tournament concluded Monday afternoon and two local golfers are making a push for a state title.
Fort Collins High’s AJ Ott and Fossil Ridge’s Tyler Bricker are both within five strokes of the leader, Grand Junction’s Donny Kinnaman.
Ott, a freshman, finished Monday’s round at Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden tied for fourth place, shooting a four-over-par 75, just three strokes behind Kinnaman.
Bricker, who was named the Front Range League Player of the Year last month, is tied for 13th and shot a 6-over-par 77. He still has his eyes set on winning it all.
“I started out rough on the first nine holes, but the back nine I played well,” Bricker said. “Winning has been my goal from the start, so hopefully I can go out and play well (today).”
Also competing Monday was Fort Collins’ Hunter Paugh and Fossil Ridge’s Austin Preiss. Preiss is still in the thick of things, finishing Round 1 12-over-par. Paugh shot a 32-over-par 103.
All four will move on to this morning’s final round. Ott will tee off at 10:18 a.m., Bricker at 9:42.
