Owego volleyball and Section 4 championships seem as inevitable as winter following fall.
The Indians claimed a sectional crown for the second year in a row by defeating Oneonta 3-1 in the Class B finals Saturday at Watkins Glen High. After dropping the first game 25-22, Owego swept the next three 25-23, 25-21, 25-9.
Owego (16-0) moves on to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association playoffs, where it will face the winner of the Section 1 vs. Section 9 matchup. Indians coach Brittney Horton said she believes it will take place Saturday in the Elmira area.
Lauren Edwards collected 36 setter assists and served three aces for Owego.
Abbey Manning and Stephanie Raftis added 19 digs apiece, with Kim Lavender good for 13 kills and Rachel Merrill for five blocks.
Horton said she’s been rebuilding the program since it lost in sectionals three years ago.
“Three years ago was the first time in about seven to eight years,” she explained.
After Saturday’s first-game defeat, Horton challeneged her girls to pick up the pace.
“We’ve talked about the level of intensity. We’re continuing to work on it,” she said.
* Tioga 3, Harpursville 0: Tioga swept its way to the Section 4 Class D title with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 victory over Harpursville.
The Tigers (14-4) will play the Section 3 champion Saturday at Jamesville-DeWitt High.
Bry Godfrey finished with 10 points, two aces, 10 digs and eight kills for Tioga, which lost in last year’s Class C sectional finals to Edison. Donnette Hutchson added 16 digs and Natalie Burns four blocks.
Tioga coach Des Ford said her team has been plagued by inconsistency, but an influx of five players from the junior varsity has provided a jolt.
“They brought competition,” she said.
