Palm Desert boys' water polo splashes past Rio Mesa

Behind a strong third quarter, the Palm Desert High School boys’ water polo squad advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Division VI playoffs with a 11-5 victory over Rio Mesa (No. 1 seed in Pacific View League).

After going up 5-3 at the half, the Aztecs came out firing and built a 9-3 lead at the end of the third quarter as Grant Stein led offensively with five goals.

“The guys executed well on both sides of the ball and we were able to play as a team and shut them down,” Palm Desert head coach John Nichols said.

Zach Rhodes led defensively with 15 saves in goal, while Mark Zikov contributed three goals for the Aztecs, who advanced to the CIF main round with a 22-9 victory over Morro Bay on Tuesday.

Zach Hudgens (two goals) and Daniel Rolph (one goal) rounded out the scoring for Palm Desert, which faces Oaks Christian at 11 a.m. on Saturday at La Quinta High School.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

MALIBU 11, XAVIER PREP 3: Teddy Powers, Nathan Salmon and Riley Nelson scored one goal apiece as the Saints fell to Malibu (No. 1 seed in Tri-Valley League) in the first round of the CIF Division VI playoffs.

Xavier Prep, which trailed only 5-3 in the third quarter on Thursday, defeated Beaumont 8-6 in the wild card round to reach the main draw of the playoffs.

HEMET 14, PALM SPRINGS 10: The Indians fell in the first round of the CIF Division VI playoffs.

No individual stats were available.

Palm Springs beat Cathedral (Los Angeles) 28-7 in the wild card round on Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL

WEST SHORES 3, PACIFIC LUTHERAN 1: The Wildcats reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Division VA playoffs for the second time in school history with a come-from-behind 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-14 home victory.

According to West Shores coach Mark Ruiz, the Wildcats reached the semifinals in 2007.

Esmerelda Manriquez helped fuel the comeback with a strong second game. Sofia Campos also stood out with her serving.

“All of our hits were going in and we played a good all-around game,” Ruiz said.

West Shores will host Temecula Prep on Saturday in the quarterfinal matchup.

PASADENA POLY 3, LA QUINTA 1: Kaelyn Brock had nine aces and four kills but the Blackhawks came up short in a 25-7, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15 road loss in the second round of the CIF Division 2A playoffs.

Ciara Reistad had seven kills, while Brielle Weimer and Madison Barnes recorded three kills apiece.

Kyrsti Photias contributed 16 assists for La Quinta, who upset Elsinore in five games on Tuesday to move on to the second round.

“The girls played well all season and we’re super proud with our first round victory,” Blackhawks coach Ronda Sommaripa said. “We’re a young team with a bright future and we’re looking forward to next season.”

La Quinta finished 12-6 overall.

RIVERSIDE CHRISTIAN 3, MARYWOOD-PALM VALLEY 0: The Firebirds’ season came to an end as they fell 25-11, 25-23, 25-13 to the No. 1 seed in the Warrior League in the second round of the CIF Division VA playoffs.
