Zagarion Brown rushed 11 times for 91 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown, to lead a Palmetto ground game that totaled 439 yards in a 48-7 non-region victory against Dixie Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Kenngie Burts added 79 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries and Troy Allen chipped in 62 yards and two scores on just six carries for the Mustangs (1-0), who play host to Powdersville next week in that school’s first varsity game.
Allen scored on a 1-yard run, Burts scored from 21 yards out and quarterback Corey Crews connected with Tyler Cromer for a 31-yard touchdown pass as Palmetto jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead.
Brown added a 19-yard touchdown, Allen a 20-yard scoring run and Colton Clardy had a 15-yard scoring jaunt as the Mustangs’ lead swelled to 41-0 before Dixie (0-1) scored.
The Hornets scored on a 29-yard pass from Chandler Thompson to Trent Willie, but Palmetto’s Jasper Prestigui responded with a 70-yard kickoff return for the final score of the night.
