stay cool

Some players listen to music to get them in the right frame of mind prior to the game, and Ramsey is no exception. But while most of them are looking to get cranked up, Ramsey’s objective is to stay even-keeled. “I’m always hyped about the game,” he said. “I need something to calm me down just a little bit, keep me neutral. I need to chill a little bit.” Besides his pregame music — typically something by Drake — Ramsey doesn’t do much else to get himself ready. “I’m not really superstitious. I feel I’m good enough, my coaches have prepared me well enough, my teammates have helped me, and I can just go out and play.”

make something happen

Ramsey prefers defense, but he doesn’t rule out making a visit to the end zone from time to time. “I’m defensive minded; I like hitting people,” he said. “I’m really physical. On offense you get hit. You score touchdowns, but you get hit. On defense, I think I can score just as much — interceptions, stripping a fumble. I want to be a playmaker on the field, like (former LSU cornerback) Tyrann Mathieu. I just want to be one of the elite cornerbacks, one of the elite players. I want to be the best I can be.”

family tradition

Watching his older brother, Jamal, play youth football had a predictable effect on a young and impressionable Jalen. “I started playing when I was 5, as soon as I could play,” he recalled. “I was all in for that. I saw my older brother play, my cousins — really, my whole family played. I grew up around it and I wanted football from the beginning. I’ve loved football, all my life.”

staying in touch

Since committing to Southern Cal, Ramsey said he’s been in constant contact with most of the coaching staff, including coach Lane Kiffin. His primary communication, though, is with former Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin, who was on the Kentucky staff when he first observed Ramsey. “We tweet or (direct message) every day,” Ramsey said of his exchanges with Martin. “I will take visits, but I’m solid in my commitment to USC.”
