CLYDE — Freshman Miranda Herevia played the hero role as she capped a hat-trick with the go-ahead goal with only 30 seconds to play Tuesday in Port Clinton’s 4-3 victory over Clyde in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
“Sammy (Schroeder) kicked it across the half (line) past a defender,” Herevia said. “I made a J-run. I ran up to the ball, the goalie started to come out, I tapped it forward and the goalie (retreated). I kicked it to the left corner.
“It’s just amazing getting the game-winning goal. I can’t really explain how I feel. (It gives me) confidence.”
Schroeder had an assist on Herevia’s first goal while Abbi Pitts set up her second. Ashtyn Baney added a goal off a pass from Gracey Stewart.
“We had a team effort,” Herevia said. “If we lost we wouldn’t be in second place in the conference. We’re doing really good. Last year, most of the team was upperclassmen and this year it’s mostly underclassmen.”
Port Clinton continues to develop a foundation in its second year as a varsity program. The Redskins are currently alone in second place with one game to play after finishing second last season.
Port Clinton trailed 3-1 at the half Tuesday.
